I was going to do a bit of digging and tidying up at the lottie, but due to the fact that its about -3 deg, no way am I even going to think about venturing up there. Good thing is that I received my spuds and they are on the window sill starting to chit. Just waiting for my two bails of straw to arrive.

Manure!

Although I have already dug manure into some of my beds, I still have around 30 bags of pure manure to dig in. At least 16 of these will be used for my spuds along with two bails of straw. the others will be divided among my Beans, Leeks and Swedes. The weather is still a bit damp for me to go on the lottie, but it does give me a bit of breathing space to tidy the other beds up. Only the Kale bed to do with just seven plants left to pull once I’ve harvested the remainder of leaves. Next on the list is liming and chitting of spuds.

Spring clean

As the weather has been barmy, this is the best time to get onto the lottie and sort out all those old bits of rubbish that you didn’t get round to before Crimbo. Knowing my luck I’ll have all the good intentions, then we will have about 2ft of snow for the next month. Waiting for my spuds to arrive from Alan Romans in Scotland. Must also checkout the shed from those winds.

Failed Parsnips

No parsnips for Christmas. In the past its never been a problem, but for some reason, my parsnips have failed to deliver. I buy them new each year from reputable merchants but to no avail. I will have to check out the soil and then the seeds if the same happens in 2012.

Have cleared most of the lottie now and tidied up the paths. 20 bags of pure horse manure have been delivered for the spuds next year, These will be grown on a no dig system. 88 garlic cloves have been planted on two beds and there is still some curly Kale left on the lottie for the coming months. Because of a stomach problem that I have developed, I am unable to grow all the veg that I want, also am not growing any root veg except spuds and swedes. So the veg for 2012 season will be: French Beans, Leeks, First early spuds, main crop spuds, Calebrese, Kale, Swedes and Garlic.

I planted four rows of Calbrese and the rest of the spuds. The garlic as always, is coming on well with the rhubarb shooting up to the sky. The next thing is to erect the pole for the climbing French beans.

With the weather warming up, I have now been down to the lottie to firstly, dig in 30 bags of well rotted compost and secondly, to sow three row’s of Parsnips, five row’s of carrots and three rows of Beetroot. The Calebrese is coming on and should be ready for transplanting within a week or two.

Cleared most of the beds yesterday as the weather was fine. Only one more bed to clear then its adding fertilizer ready for sowing, as long as the rain stays off.

Back to work

After about two months absence on the lottie due to me having a shoulder injury and tendonitus in the knees, i though it was about time to do a bit of work on the beds. Although it was weedy, it wasn’t that hard in clearing a couple. I was also surprised to find four good looking parsnips that i thought i had cleared. I’ve decided to get rid of my compost heap as some wanker on the lottie thought it would be good to dump his rubbish in it, so go it must. See what happens to the beds in the next few weeks.
